Welcome the queen Winter at the royal Kernave!

Who said there are no mountains in Lithuania? A visit to this city, located only 35 km from Vilnius, will seriously challenge this statement. On fun, hilly routes you’ll get to know the picturesque Neris Coast, the legendary Pajauta Valley and the highlights of the city – the mounds that surrounded the last pagan capital of Europe. They’re a fantastic vantage point from which you can see the crown of the ancient Baltic capital.

For those who are in a sporty mood – we’re waiting for you on January 21 at the first TrekTours of the year. We’ll admire the historical heritage and enchanting nature while hiking the 9, 16, 21 and 31 km routes.

9 km: with the whole family! If you dream of big challenges, it’s best to start with small steps. The shortest route is a great way to prepare for the longer hikes of the season. Children and grandparents can hike together, and the most important thing is that it’s easy and interesting for everyone! On the way, you will meet the majestic „mountains” of Lithuania – five mounds surrounding the Pajauta Valley, Dzukian pine forests, and the White Hill, on the top of which you can admire the spectacular beauty of the Neris Loop.

16 km: in the footsteps of history! Kernave isn’t called the Lithuanian Troy for nothing. Surrounded by five hills, the ancient capital of Lithuania is a real open-air museum. The Baltic culture, which flourished here for more than 10,000 years, can still be felt around the city, even though there isn’t much material evidence left. The most impressive are the mounds still preserved here, which once were adorned by the castles of the Lithuanian rulers and at the foot of which the first settlements were built. You can see them all at the end of the hike when you reach the viewing platform of the mounds, and the most curious can extend their visit to Kernave by visiting the museum of the archaeological site.

21 km: both nature and history! This route is balanced for those who are unsure if they are more fascinated with the natural or cultural heritage. After beginning your hike in the city of Kernave, do not rush past the most interesting buildings in the city. One of them is the single-tower St Virgin Mary Chapelier’s Church of Kernave. Wandering through the labyrinthine streets of the city, you will start to notice how the forest takes control of the city. Here you will come across a completely different world: lean pines, a freshwater lake, and the bend of the Neris River. But even in the forest, there’s no escaping history. After all, it was these lands that the rulers of Lithuania once not only hunted in but also hosted honorable foreign delegations and made important political decisions.

31 km: New Year’s challenge! Did you (like many on New Year’s Eve) set some impressive goals and vow to step out of your comfort zone? If so, make the longest route your first challenge of the year! Everyone will be your support team here: from energetic volunteers to the beautiful forests, lakes, mounds, and rivers of Kernave. There will be no shortage of dunes even for the hardiest! Bartkuskis dune, hidden by lean pines, will wake your imagination and unconsciously transport you to the distant Nida, bringing back sunny summer memories.
