Cosmic kilometers: a hike through the quarries of Naujoji Akmenė
Do you feel like you’re losing your marbles and want to escape to another planet? Then it’s time to take the first step because you won’t reach enlightenment on the sofa. Cosmic kilometers that bring your soul back to your body and your body back to the unknown Earth will take you through the spectacular canyons of Mars in the quarries of Naujoji Akmenė.
If you’ve never been there, you’ll be blown away, and if you have, you’ll see what you’ve never seen before, because this quarry is alive, constantly changing and opening up in new ways. On May 11, you can clear your head, get some physical exercise, and recharge your batteries emotionally, as there are 19 km, 32 km, and 56 km routes to choose from. There aren’t only canyons to explore but also Eurovision hits to listen to along the way.

Mars on Earth! Mountains, ravines, craters, valleys… Everything here is so familiar, but also strange, seen and yet unknown. That’s the impression hikers get when they reach the Karpėnai limestone quarry. The famous site in Naujoji Akmenė attracts hundreds of curious visitors every year, who are speechless when they get here. The man-made terrain is modeled after the images seen in school atlases and movies about the moon. After exploring this cosmic landscape, we make our way to Naujoji Akmenė. Its roofs, glittering in the distance, bring us back to earth and accompany us to the finish.
Lithuanian Switzerland, Swiss Lithuania! If you’ve ever visited the Alpine region, we are sure that the landscape there has been etched in your memory for a long time. Although we don’t have any mountains in Lithuania, this route will take you to places that many Lithuanians would question the existence of. After passing the Karpėnai limestone quarry, you will reach the Menčiai quarry. To say that the scenery is mesmerizing is next to saying nothing. The panoramic view from the cliffs, dominated by valleys and lakes reminiscent of bodies of water embedded in mountain peaks, is more eloquent than words.
A journey through the past, present, and future! The spectacular quarries are nothing new. The first mines were set up here in 1929, and the rocks you’ll see on the hike were formed almost 300 million years ago! After you’ve explored the otherworldly canyons and „craters„, continue on to Akmenė. Here you’ll get a glimpse of the present day with the tower of the town church and the local museum, and you can take a look at the Dabikinė manor house if you walk a little further. After visiting the preserved house of lords, we turn our attention to the Alkiškės Lutheran Church. Stopping at the house of worship, we have a chance to give thanks for the hike and our legs, which have helped us cover more than half a hundred kilometers!

REGISTRATION
After arriving to the start area, your ticket will be scanned (mobile versions accepted) and you will be handed out your starting package.
PARKING
Parking in the parking lots located in the territory of the city of Naujoji Akmenė.
STARTING
After registration, you are allowed to begin the hike on the designated time for your route, which can be found in the route comparison area.
DISHES DEPOSIT
If you do not have a cup for tea, bowl and a spoon for lunch, it will be possible to borrow it in the starting area, leaving a 1 euro deposit. The deposit will be returned after the hike by returning the borrowed dishes.
HIKING
Rest and assistance stops will be set up all across the hike route. You will also be able to replenish your water supplies, have a cup of tea, grab a snack and if needed, receive first medical assistance.
TRANSPORTATION AFTER TERMINATING YOUR HIKE EARLY
Participants wishing to terminate their hike early will have to get to the nearest rest and assistance stop. From there, they will be brought back to the start area by designated vehicles. For participants who have not completed the hike, e-mail the diploma will be sent by e-mail specified during registration within 15 minutes after the finish is recorded in the registration system.
FINISHING
All of the hike routes are radial, thus you will start and finish and the same place – Naujoji Akmenė town square, L. Petravičius a. 4A, Naujoji Akmenė (GPS:56.3220, 22.8816). KHere, the participants who have successfully completed their chosen route will be awarded with medals. The e-diploma will be sent to the participant by e-mail specified during registration by mail within 15 minutes after finishing.
When registering, all participants agree with hike regulations.
