Back to Latvia: start the summer in the UNESCO city

Kernavė, brimming with history, the charming Curonian Spit, modernist Kaunas, and the historic center of Vilnius – these are the places that many Lithuanians know very well. But do you know what they all have in common with the town of our Latvian brothers, Kuldīga? The center of this city, also known as the heart of Kurzeme, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, just like Vilnius.

You may have explored it as a tourist, but we bet you haven’t visited it as a hiker yet! Four routes of 9, 16, 22, and 37 km will take you through the fairytale beauty of the Old Town, the grandeur of the Venta River, the panoramas of the area, and the songs of its famous waterfalls.

A hike with the singing waterfalls. You’ll start the hike by discovering Kuldīga and its different shades. A slow walk will take you to Alekšupīte waterfall, where you’ll have the opportunity to listen to its song live. Guided by Latvia’s highest waterfall, you’ll continue across the Kuldīga brick bridge to Venta waterfall, the widest natural waterfall in Europe! Then, continue along the wide Venta River until you reach the promenade of Liepāja Street. Here, one can’t miss the interesting doors of the buildings and the ornate details of their skylights.

Get to know Veckuldīga. After exploring the old town of Kuldīga with its waterfalls, the widest in Europe and the highest in Latvia, we will head towards Veckuldīga castle mound. This was once the largest center of the Curonian region known as Bandava. There, you will first see Veckuldīga Manor and then the mound itself, which is said to have a hole. After visiting the mound, you’ll head back to the Venta River, the perfect companion for your return to the city.

A dance of the wonders of man and nature. The route will bring together the pearls of Mother Nature and the wonders of man. We’ll be able to appreciate all this from the bird’s eye view of the Kuldīga lookout tower in the first half of the hike. From the top of the tower, you will have a wonderful view of the banks of the Venta River and the town of Kuldīga, and if you are lucky, you will also be able to see Kalnmuiža Manor. The route will then take you to the longest man-made cave labyrinth in Latvia, the Riežupe Sand Caves, which will take you back to the forests. They will envelop you in silence and tranquility and help you leave your everyday worries behind.

Discover all the treasures of the Kuldīga region. Kuldīga is like a dream: incredibly beautiful and interesting. So don’t miss out on anything! Listen to the song of the waterfalls and rivers, the silence of the forests, and admire the historical and cultural monuments. On this adventurous discovery tour, you’ll go further than other hikers along the Venta River and explore the surrounding forests and their secrets. Sun-kissed and accompanied by the songs of the forest and the river, you’ll make your way back, taking the time to stop and enjoy the amazing view of the Venta River from the Black Kolka.

REGISTRATION
After arriving to the start area, your ticket will be scanned (mobile versions accepted) and you will be handed out your starting package.

PARKING
Parking in the parking lots located in the territory of the city of Merkinė. You can conveniently find them on the event map.

STARTING
After registration, you are allowed to begin the hike on the designated time for your route, which can be found in the route comparison area.

DISHES DEPOSIT
If you do not have a cup for tea, bowl and a spoon for lunch, it will be possible to borrow it in the starting area, leaving a 1 euro deposit. The deposit will be returned after the hike by returning the borrowed dishes.

HIKING
Rest and assistance stops will be set up all across the hike route. You will also be able to replenish your water supplies, have a cup of tea, grab a snack and if needed, receive first medical assistance.

TRANSPORTATION AFTER TERMINATING YOUR HIKE EARLY
Participants wishing to terminate their hike early will have to get to the nearest rest and assistance stop. From there, they will be brought back to the start area by designated vehicles. For participants who have not completed the hike, e-mail the diploma will be sent by e-mail specified during registration. by mail within 15 minutes after the finish is recorded in the registration system.

FINISHING
All of the hike routes are radial, thus you will start and finish and the same place – Pētera iela 5, Kuldīga, Kuldīgas pilsēta, Kuldīgas novads, Latvia (GPS: 56.9718, 21.9637). KHere, the participants who have successfully completed their chosen route will be awarded with medals. The e-diploma will be sent to the participant by e-mail specified during registration by mail within 15 minutes after finishing.

When registering, all participants agree with hike regulations.
